Cambon, Jules

Cambon, Jules
(1845-1935)
   administrator, diplomat
Born in Paris, Jules Cambon was the brother of the diplomat paul cambon. After an administrative career, in particular in government in Algeria (1891), he was named (1897) ambassador to Washington, where, in part, he later helped to negotiate the peace treaty ending the Spanish-American War. He then served as ambassador to Madrid and to Berlin (1907-14) and, in that capacity, helped to settle the diplomatic question relating to Morocco (the Agadir incident). He then was the secretary-general to the minister of foreign affairs (1915-19) and was one of the signers of the Treaty of Versailles. Cambon published La Diplomate (1925), and was elected to the Académie Française in 1918.
